    Description

Description (and please see photographs): Unusual programme printed on silk, being a "Grand Testimonial tendered to the Widow and Children of the lat J.W. Kelly, "The Rolling-Mill Man".  Measures approx. 8" x 16".
Kelly (1838-1896) was an Irish story-teller, singer, performer.  Finding an old obit online, apparently he was one of the highest-paid performers of the period, making as much as 0 a week. He was also remembered for a couple of baseball comic songs - "Slide, Kelly Slide" among them.
He died of "acute gastritis" at the age of 38.  And it was reported in his obit that "his large earnings were dissipated with the rapidity which with they were made!".
