Primitive Storm Guide and Thermometer, Vintage Weather Forecaster
This small primitive wooden hanging piece contains both a thermometer and what I think is an early barometer housed in spaces cut into the wood of the plaque. The thermometer is in good shape and appears to be accurate. The other side of this piece is the ‘storm guide’ - a fluid filled glass column with a dark oily-looking substance (it floats on top of the clear liquid) . Alongside this column are the words STORMY, CHANGE and FAIR. Obviously some sort of change occurs in the glass column which predicts the weather. The paper behind the thermometer which has the temperature scale on it says this piece was made in the USA. It also has a patent date but it is not possible to see the last number as the red bulb of the thermometer is in front of it. However, I would guesstimate this piece dates from the late 1800’s. Under the glass columns are the words “ Figure How Little This Costs Per Month”. In small print at the very bottom of the piece it says “ Sample No 8200”. There are no other markings. The wood that holds the glass columns was originally varnished but some has worn off. What appears to be bent over nails are on the front between the two columns as well as three small holes. The metal hanging strip down the middle of the back is probably not original to this piece. This is an interesting old conversation piece. It would compliment primitive and/or country collectibles nicely. A neat piece for that storm chaser or weather enthusiast.
